THE HIKE UP TO “ELS ANGELS”

The walking excursion “La Pujada a Peu als Àngels” is one of the most popular races with a great deal of appeal, not only in Catalonia, but in Spain as well, as the contest has been held almost forty times. The race, which is held at the beginning of springtime, began in 1964 on the initiative of the board of directors, lead by Santiago Sobreques, but it was not until 1971, that women were allowed to compete.

This event has both a competitive and a non-competitive aspect. From the beginning, the distinction was made in registering federated and non-federated competitors, classifications are made separately, with regard to the gender and age of the participants.

The non-competitive aspect of the event is characterised by all those who, following the path taken by the running athletes, walk up to the sanctuary of “La Mare de Déu dels Àngels”.
