The
GEiEG reunion or “Aplec”, which has been held since 1930,
is the most firmly rooted tradition within the association, and was
in its time characterised as its most important event. This event,
which is usually held in May, is characterised by a festive, friendly
atmosphere and the re-affirmation of the spirit of the association.
During the event, which usually takes place in a variety of locations
close to the city of Girona, a mass is held, games and a dinner are
organised, and sardanes are danced. One of the customs which is still
retained is that some members of the association camp out the day
before the event in the place where the reunion is to be held. This
is a celebration which has on occasions had some 5,000 visitors.
The history of the celebration of this event has its own special history.
In 1946, during the 13th reunion, the group organised a special train
to transport all the visitors to the town of Sant Pelegrí de
Cogolls. The train however, was de-railed at El Pas del Gegant, just
before the station of Bescanó, and part of the train fell into
the River Ter. The engine and part of the first coach were totally
submerged in the water. Miraculously, no one was killed, only one
person was seriously injured, GEiEG member, Pere Gibert. The more
than sixty other meetings have been held with total normality and
in a festive, friendly atmosphere.
