The
GEiEG “The pedal festival” is one of the events that the
association has traditionally organised since 1942. The organisation
of the event in the past was not very regular, as from 1959 to 1978
the event was not held, nor was the event organised in 1993 or 1994.
The celebration of this day, dedicated to cycling, was the initiative
of one of the members of the cycling section of the Group, a section
which disappeared several years later, after the celebration of more
than 30 years of “La Pujada Ciclista als Àngels”,
the cycle ride up to the Els Àngels sanctuary.
The The pedal festival is basically a day of leisure which has brought
together on occasions some 4,000 people. Places such as Banyoles,
Amer, Caldes de Malavella, Anglès, Santa Coloma de Farners,
Flaçà, La Cellera, Sils or Bordils, have all welcomed
the participants of this event. All kinds of games are organised
for young and old alike, and prizes are awarded for the best decorated
bicycle competition. Some decorated bicycles in previous events
have demonstrated a high degree of originality. Since the 35th edition
in 1997, the “The pedal festival” has made its way around
the town centre of Girona and the outskirts of the city, to the
Palau centre where games and competitions and the traditional members’
dinner are held.
