HISTÒRIA

  The GEiEG was founded by a group of friends with the idea of "promoting walking and the natural beauty of our geography".

The government of Girona passed the first statutes of the association on November 7th 1919. Soon afterwards, enthusiasm for mountain and walking activities were combined with a variety of sports and other activities. The development of the club was constant and intense, as it has been, and still is, an association of sportsmen and women renowned at national, state and international levels, and is one of the driving forces of the social and cultural life of Girona. Membership of the group increased spectacularly at the beginning of the 1970s, reaching over 20,000 members with the construction of the first indoor swimming pool in the city of Girona, in the Sant Ponç sports centre. Later the GEiEG, which had opened the athletics stadium in the Devesa in 1944, constructed the Sant Narcís sports centre (1975) and that of Palau Sacosta (1995), which was completed with the services building and the rugby pitch (1998). Since 1973, the group has also had a mountain refuge at its disposal in Sant Miquel, in the municipality of Els Hostalets d'En Bas, in La Garrotxa region. At present the GEiEG has some 17,980 members, and comprises 16 sporting sections, and its socio-cultural facet is markedly dynamic with the organisation of activities such as the traditional group meeting, the hike up to the Sanctuary of "La Mare de Déu dels Àngels", the cycling festival or "The pedal festival" or the "Lleuresport" free time activities for children and young people, which takes place during the Christmas holidays. The Group has received numerous prizes and awards during its extensive trajectory, among which the following are the most noteworthy;

* Copa Stadium (1947)
* Medalla d'Or de la Ciutat de Girona (1951)
* Medalla d'Or de la Diputació de Girona (1960)
* Creu de Sant Jordi (1994)
* Premi Athenea (1995).
